
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your brand and content the kind of source that AI systems cite. Where SEO competes for a ranking position and AEO competes to be an extracted answer, GEO competes to be referenced inside a generated one.
The distinction matters because the mechanism is different. An AI assistant doesn’t hand you position four. It writes a paragraph, and either your brand is in it or it isn’t.
Why this is now a channel
A growing share of research now happens in conversation rather than in a result list. Someone evaluating options asks an assistant to compare them. Someone with a problem describes it in a sentence and gets a synthesised answer with a handful of citations.
Two things follow:
- The shortlist forms before you’re contacted. By the time someone reaches your site, an AI may already have framed who the credible options are. If you weren’t named, you weren’t considered.
- Citation is winner-take-few. A results page has ten positions. A generated answer names three or four sources. The distribution is much harsher.
This is not a replacement for search traffic. It’s an additional surface where buying decisions are shaped, and it currently has far less competition than the SERP.
How generative engines pick sources
Different systems work differently, but the pipeline is broadly consistent:
- Retrieval. The system searches the live web (or a search index) for material relevant to the question.
- Selection. It weighs the retrieved documents for relevance, clarity, and trustworthiness.
- Synthesis. It writes an answer drawing on the selected sources.
- Attribution. It cites some subset of what it used.
Every stage has implications:
- If your page can’t be retrieved — blocked, unindexed, rendered only by client-side JavaScript — nothing else matters.
- If it can’t be parsed cleanly, it loses to a source that can.
- If your claims aren’t corroborated elsewhere, a model has reason to prefer a source that is.
- If your brand isn’t a recognised entity, there’s nothing coherent to attribute to.
What GEO actually requires
1. Be retrievable
The unglamorous prerequisite. Your content must be crawlable, server-rendered or otherwise available without executing scripts, and not blocked from the crawlers that matter.
That last point is a decision, not a default. AI crawlers are separately identifiable in robots.txt:

Blocking them is a legitimate choice for publishers protecting paid content. For a business that wants to be recommended, it’s self-defeating: you cannot be cited by a system that was never allowed to read you. Check what your robots.txt currently says — plenty of sites block these crawlers by inheritance from a template, without anyone having decided to.
2. Be a coherent entity
AI systems reason about things — companies, people, products — not just pages. Your job is to make your brand unambiguously identifiable.
- Consistent naming. One spelling, one capitalisation, everywhere.
- Consistent details. The same description, contact information, and service list across your site, your social profiles, and any directory that lists you.
- Organization structured data with
sameAslinks to your official profiles, connecting the entity across the web. - A clear About page that states plainly what you do, for whom, and where.
Contradictory information is worse than sparse information. A model that can’t resolve which “DigiWebNex” is which will cite something it can resolve instead.
3. Build corroborated authority
This is the part that can’t be shortcut. Generative systems weight sources that are independently corroborated.
- Be mentioned in places you don’t control. Industry publications, roundups, podcasts, forums, community answers. Third-party mentions carry weight precisely because you didn’t write them.
- Build topical depth, not scattered breadth. A dozen substantial pieces on one subject establish expertise more effectively than fifty shallow posts across a dozen subjects.
- Publish things worth citing. Original data, clear frameworks, specific opinions, real examples. Generic summaries of what everyone already says give a model no reason to prefer you.
- Show your work. Named authors, real credentials, dates, and sources — the same E-E-A-T signals Google’s quality guidelines describe.
4. Write in a way models can use
Some formatting habits map directly onto how these systems consume text:
- Lead with the claim. Models extract stated conclusions more reliably than implied ones.
- Use plain declarative sentences for anything you want quoted. Irony, heavy hedging, and long subordinate clauses survive summarisation poorly.
- Keep facts self-contained. A sentence that depends on three paragraphs of prior context is hard to lift.
- Define your terms. If you coin or use a specific framing, define it explicitly.
- Use real structure. Headings, lists, and tables in actual markup — the same discipline that AEO requires.
- Date your claims. “As of August 2026” lets a model judge whether your information is current.
5. Monitor your AI visibility
You cannot manage what you don’t measure, and standard analytics won’t show you this. Referral traffic from assistants is a partial signal at best, since a cited brand often gets typed into a search box rather than clicked.
Practical approach: keep a fixed list of ten to twenty questions a prospective customer might genuinely ask — “best SEO agency for a small ecommerce business,” “how do I get cited by AI search” — and run them monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Record whether you appear, who does, and how you’re described.
The description matters as much as the citation. Being named but characterised wrongly is a positioning problem you can fix with clearer content.

Notice how much overlap there is in the work. A crawlable, well-structured, genuinely authoritative site serves all three. The three-pillar approach exists because doing them separately means paying for the same foundations three times.
A realistic starting sequence
- Check your
robots.txtand decide, deliberately, which AI crawlers may read you. - Fix entity consistency — name, description, and contact details identical everywhere, with Organization schema and
sameAslinks. - Baseline your visibility by running your question list across the major assistants and writing down what you find.
- Pick one topic and go deep. Build a genuine cluster rather than isolated posts.
- Earn third-party mentions in places relevant to that topic.
- Re-run the question list quarterly and track how the descriptions change.
Be patient with this. GEO compounds more slowly than SEO and is harder to attribute. The compensation is that far fewer competitors are doing it seriously yet.

Is GEO just SEO with a new name? They share foundations, but the target differs. SEO optimises for ranking in a list; GEO optimises for being selected and named as a source during synthesis. That shifts the emphasis toward entity clarity, corroboration, and extractable claims.
Can I pay to appear in AI answers? Not in the organic citations. Some assistants carry advertising, but that’s separate from being cited as a source. Citation is earned.
Should I block AI crawlers? It depends on your business. Publishers whose product is their content have a real argument for blocking. A business that wants to be recommended to buyers does not — blocking guarantees you can never be cited.
How do I know GEO is working? Through deliberate manual tracking of a fixed question set over time, supplemented by any assistant referral traffic and by branded search volume, which often rises when a brand starts getting recommended.
